How Mnemozi works and how to use it

How the Methodology Works

Mnemozi combines two science-backed approaches: mnemonic associations and spaced repetition.

Mnemonics: From Components to Image

Every Chinese character is made of components (radicals). We break each character apart and build a vivid association that links the components to the meaning.

Example

好 hǎo — good

女 (woman) + 子 (child) = A woman with a child — that's good, that's happiness!

These images stick far better than rote memorization because they engage visual and emotional memory.

Spaced Repetition (SRS)

The system shows a character right when you're about to forget it — the optimal moment for memorization. After answering, you rate yourself:

  • Know — interval increases (1 day → 3 → 7 → 14...)
  • Don't know — the card returns today for reinforcement

Important: the interval depends on your answer. The system adapts to your memorization speed for each specific character.

Study Modes

Learn + ReviewPrimary

New characters + scheduled reviews. Recommended mode for daily practice.

Reading (CN → EN)

See a character — recall the meaning. Trains reading comprehension.

Production (EN → CN)

See the meaning — recall the character. Harder mode, better retention.

Review Only

Only due cards, no new ones. Great for clearing a backlog.

Writing Practice

Practice correct stroke order. Builds muscle memory for handwriting.

Tone Training

Listen to pronunciation and identify the tone (1–4). Tones change word meaning in Chinese!

FAQ

Why am I reviewing words I already know?
That's the spaced repetition system at work. It shows a character just before you'd forget it. If you confidently answer 'Know', intervals grow and the card appears less often.
Why is the mnemonic weird / doesn't match the translation?
A mnemonic isn't a translation — it's a memory hook. The more vivid and unusual the association, the better your memory works. If the suggested image doesn't suit you, you can write your own on the character page.
How fast will I learn N characters?
With 5–10 minutes of daily practice: ~50 characters per month. HSK 1 (150 characters) in ~3 months. Speed depends on consistency, not session length.
What is HSK?
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standardized Chinese proficiency test. HSK 1 = basic (~150 words), HSK 4 = university admission (~1200 words), HSK 5 = fluent reading (~2500 words).
What's included in the free plan?
All HSK 1–3 characters (900+), spaced repetition, mnemonics, writing practice, up to 3 collections. Enough for your first year of study.
How does the AI Tutor work?
The AI Tutor is a chat with a personal tutor powered by Claude (Anthropic). It sees your HSK progress, knows which characters you're studying, and where you make mistakes. You can ask things like: 'Explain the difference between 的/地/得', 'How to use 了 correctly?', 'Make a sentence with 学习'. Free plan: 3 messages per month. Pro: unlimited + upgraded model. Find the AI Tutor in the bottom menu (robot icon).
Can I use Mnemozi for teaching?
Yes! Pro plan includes teacher tools: create groups, assign collections, track student progress. You can also become a mnemonic author and earn through the Pioneer program.
